In Rome, in 1823 he was one of the founders of the British Academy of Art. He returned to Edinburgh in 1826 and became a member of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1829. Four years later he settled in Rome, and from 1844 he worked in Bertel Thorvaldsen's former studio. Known as the "Allegory Of Fishing", sculpted and signed by Duchoiselle, these marvelous patinated bronze figures are seen seated on canoes, hunting. On the Chief's canoe are his hunting spoils, which include birds and wild boar. Bronze with a brown and parcel-gilt patina can be found throughout each subject with elaborate chissel work, making these two as life-like and as natural as possible. The two are further adorned with 24k parcel-gilt decoration on their arm and ankle bangles, feathered crowns, jewelry and fish netting.

Provenance: Adams-Acton won the Royal Academy’s Gold Medal for sculpture in 1858 and his prize was to study in Rome under John Gibson, the important British Neoclassical sculptor. This bust of a young lady as Flora, Roman goddess of flowers and the Spring, was probably executed by Adams-Acton in Gibson’s studio in Rome, where he spent a successful period making portraits of Grand Tour patrons. The inscription, ‘Ellen A. Hall’, is probably the name of the sitter, who was most likely a young British tourist in Rome. Considering what a sensitive and accomplished sculptor he was, surprisingly little is known about John de Vaere. Born in France in 1755, he settled in England some time before 1786 when he enrolled as a student at the Royal Academy Schools. In 1787 he left to study in Rome, with the financial assistance of Josiah Wedgwood. In Rome he won a Silver Medal for Sculpture from the Pope and became an assistant to John Flaxman.
On his return to England in 1790, he worked as a modeler for Wedgwood until the latter’s death in 1795, after which he worked with Eleanor Coade, probably replacing John Bacon...

“They give humanity in a way that a more abstract sculpture can’t give,” says Los Angeles designer Timothy Corrigan, who loves pieces that beg to be touched. For a welcoming entry hall project in California, Corrigan selected an antique Persian rug and a bust that invites you to touch it. A collection of sculptures in wood, marble and brass complement the star of the show.
For Consort cofounder and creative director Mat Sanders, a bust doesn’t have to be pretty. “I most enjoy busts that are a little busted,” Sanders jokes — but choose something with a soul you can live with, as “sculpture representative of the human form carries with it an energy you will add to the space.”
