Constantine Brancusi Bronze Sculpture Madame Pogany Istrati-Dumitresco Casting

About the Item

Madame Pogany Bronze Sculpture Constantine Brancusi Istrati-Dumitresco Casting Circa 1960s Height 17-1/2" by approximately 9" Deep and Wide This magnificent Brancusi sculpture is one of those cast by Alexandre Istrati and Natalia Dumitresco, who were inheritors of Brancusi's studio, sculptures and possessions. They were his neighbors and for years before his death had helped him produce his works, doing things like acquiring the right wood to act as a base for a new sculpture. Shortly after his death, they began casting some of Brancusi's pieces, including some works he never chose to cast. This version of Madame Pogany is one such piece the Istrati-Dumitresco team chose to cast. It is smooth backed and looks to be an evolution of Madame Pogany 1 from 1913 and was probably sculpted by Brancusi in this time-frame. There was a lot of fuss in the art world about the value and legitimacy of works cast posthumously in the 1970s. Rodin's pieces and pieces cast by museums were coming under fire. Brancusi's works cast by Susse Fondeur in 1971 were also questioned. The furor died down as quickly as it started and now most of these pieces are afforded largely the same value and prestige as works cast in the artist's lifetime. This piece is Incredible. The bronze casting is as good as any done during Brancusi's life, and Istrati and Dumitresco knew the process of production, since they had been involved in it during Brancusi's later years. One look at this casting and you can see it is based on an original sculpture. The crispness of all the features is astounding. The eyes, nose, mouth and ear are as crisp as any of Brancusi's other sculptures and they are beyond beautiful. And one important detail - they acid washed the bronze, a lost technique, which Brancusi employed on his bronzes and which looks so spectacular on this glorious sculpture. This piece was produced in the sixties and has some verdigris on the bronze and a ring of verdigris on the oak base from the bronze square to which the sculpture is mounted. Occasionally, one sees variants and poor imitations of this Istrati-Dumitresco Pogany appear on the market, horribly cast, lacking the grace and clean lines of the original. This piece is an important part of art history. Although not cast by Brancusi in his lifetime, one can easily understand why Istrati and Dumitresco felt this Madame Pogany sculpture deserved to be cast. It is a marvelous work. No one knows how many of these were cast by Istrati-Dumitresco, or how many survive, but the number likely can be counted on one hand. In very fine vintage condition. Substantial patina to bronze and age wear to oak base. Measures 17-1/2 tall by approximately 9" deep and wide. Displays marvelously.
