Marble Portrait Bust of Edward Willes by John Bacon
About the Item
A fine late Georgian marble portrait bust of 18th century barrister, politician and judge, Edward Willes. Signed by the artist, this superb bust was made by 18th century sculptor, John Bacon. It demonstrates his exceptional artistic skill and perfected sculpting technique for which he was much celebrated.
We believe this bust was sculpted at the height of Edward Willes career, when he became a justice of His Majesty’s Court of King’s Bench (from 1768 until his death in 1787). Willes was a prominent figure of his time and even had his portrait painted by leading 18th century artist, Thomas Gainsborough.
John Bacon (1740-1799) was a well-established British sculptor. As an apprentice at the porcelain works at Lambeth in London, he showcased great moulding skill. This led to his promotion as a modeller, where in 1763 he began working with marble. To this day, Bacon is a celebrated artist. He won many awards including the Royal Academy’s first gold medal for sculpture in 1769. In 1770, he was elected as an Associate of the Royal Academy in recognition of his exquisite work.
Bacon is regarded as the founder of the British School of Sculpture. Many of his most prominent works can be found across London, including George III and the River Thames in the courtyard of Somerset House, Monument to Pitt the Elder in the Guildhall as well as various busts of notable 18th century figures such as George III and English writer, Samuel Johnson. In his later life, Bacon directed model making and design at Coade’s Artificial Stone Manufactory.

Bust of Doulton Chairman Lewis John Eric Hooper by John Broad
Located in Wormelow, Herefordshire
Dated 1904, this stoneware bust was made by late 19th century Doulton sculptor John Broad. It depicts Lewis John Eric Hooper, descendant of John Doulton who was founder of the famous Doulton & Co. of Lambeth, London. A barrister at the time, Hooper became Managing Director of the ceramics company from 1919 and subsequently Chairman from 1925. Here he is depicted in his barrister dress by the talented hand of Broad, giving us a glimpse into the character of Hooper as well as Broad’s artistic talent for statuary. The bust is in good condition, made in stoneware and sits on a wooden plinth detailed with plaque. This bust is likely a one-off commission.
Broad was one of the most prominent artists of Doulton & Co. during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Specialising in large works, he had a talent for producing vases, statuary and portrait medallions. This stone bust of Lewis John Eric Hooper...

John de Vaere Statuary Marble Busts
Located in London, GB
A fine pair of George III statuary marble busts of a boy and a girl by John de Vaere (1755 – 1830), 1798.
Signed J DE-VAERE Sculpr. 1798.
Considering what a sensitive and accomplished sculptor he was, surprisingly little is known about John de Vaere. Born in France in 1755, he settled in England some time before 1786 when he enrolled as a student at the Royal Academy Schools. In 1787 he left to study in Rome, with the financial assistance of Josiah Wedgwood. In Rome he won a Silver Medal for Sculpture from the Pope and became an assistant to John Flaxman.
On his return to England in 1790, he worked as a modeler for Wedgwood until the latter’s death in 1795, after which he worked with Eleanor Coade, probably replacing John Bacon...
