About the Item
A 19th C Asian carved gilt wood Buddha
This highly decorative Burmese or Indian carved hardwood study of the seated Buddha has been well carved in hardwood. It is decorated with delicate tube lined gesso with multiple small coloured glass disks forming ornamentation on the robes and the headdress. The original gilt finish is displaying some natural wear with the red base coat showing through. The eyes are inlaid in glass, there is evidence of slight cracking to some surfaces which would be caused through handling and natural shrinkage.

Late 19th Century Japanese Carved Hardwood Okimono of a Man, circa 1890
Located in Central England, GB
Late 19th C Japanese carved hardwood okimono of a man, circa 1890
This top quality and most impressive large scale Japanese carved hardwood okimono superbly depicts a characterful study of a delightfully crafty looking man. He is dressed simply in a robe. On his back, he has a rolled woven mat for resting and a turtle shell sun hat hangs below. On his side hanging from his waist sash, there is a simple hand fan made from woven palm leaves and around his neck, he is wearing a string of very large beads. This unfortunate character is on a journey and he seems to have lost or broken one sandal. His foot is sore and he is resting it on his gnarly walking stick. He has one arm outstretched and is holding out a large piece of fresh fruit as an offering perhaps to barter for new sandals...

19th century Chinese bronze cencer with Buddhist lion decoration circa 1860
Located in Central England, GB
This large Chinese bronze censer dates to circa 1860. It is made in three parts, stand, vessel, and lid. The lid has pierced decorative panels with pine trees and a bold Buddhist lion finial for lifting.
The censer has lifting handles in the shape of bamboo to each side and again also has panels with pine forests with mythical beasts and side mounts in the form of Buddhist lion mastheads.
It is raised on four shaped legs with a beast mask head at the top and sits on the raised and pierced stand.
The decoration on this piece is all hand finished with chasing and engraving giving good detail.
The censer has a green/brown patina. Circa 1860
Censers are a type of vessel for burning incense. In many cultures burning incense has spiritual and religious connotations which influence the design and decoration of the censer.
The lion is one of Buddhism’s most potent symbols. Traditionally the lion is associated with regality, strength and power. It is therefore an appropriate symbol of Buddha who, tradition has it, was a regal prince. As Buddhist priests and monks from India, they brought with them stories of stone Asiatic lions...
