About the Item

A superb black forest carved walnut study of a monk. This exceptionally well carved bust of a 19th century monk has been produced out of a single piece of rich dense walnut and then mounted onto a separate walnut plinth, all original. It captures this portly and mischievous looking monk with great expression and character even down to the wink of an eye and moles on his face. He is possibly being reprimanded by a senior priest. This very tactile object is full of charm and character. Finely signed by the artist carver on his left shoulder J Chartron. Circa 1890, in very good original condition with superb colour and patination. Dimensions: W 30 cm (11.8") x D 17 cm (6.7") x H 24 cm (9.4").

19th Century Pair of Antique Horticultural Black Forest Figures These very fine examples are of exhibition quality. Their scale, modelling, and superb artistry of carving are rare and difficult to find on the open market. They depict two rural figures and are of a large scale. The first is an 18th century male gardener dressed in typical European costume walking through trees and foliage whilst pushing a rustic wheelbarrow into which he is collecting cut flowers. The second figure in this remarkable pair is a flower girl who is also dressed in a typical period style, and she is carrying an assortment of woven baskets that are full of cut flowers. Late 19th C Japanese carved hardwood okimono of a man, circa 1890 This top quality and most impressive large scale Japanese carved hardwood okimono superbly depicts a characterful study of a delightfully crafty looking man. He is dressed simply in a robe. On his back, he has a rolled woven mat for resting and a turtle shell sun hat hangs below. On his side hanging from his waist sash, there is a simple hand fan made from woven palm leaves and around his neck, he is wearing a string of very large beads. This unfortunate character is on a journey and he seems to have lost or broken one sandal. His foot is sore and he is resting it on his gnarly walking stick.
