About the Item

19th Century Black Forest Figure Group "Bear Attacking Man" This brilliantly composed and carved walnut black forest figure group is most unusual. It depicts a large bear rearing up on its hind legs and attacking a man who is typically dressed in the rural style of forest workers at this time. He is defending himself with a large bladed knife in one hand which he has plunged into the bear and his other hand is pressed aggressively into the bear’s eye. They are standing on a naturalist base carved in the form of a fallen tree trunk amongst boulders. The movement and expression of both the man and the snarling bear are very realistic to this dire situation. The study is very finely carved in walnut with great detail and rich colour and patination. Dimensions: W 38 cm (15") x D 11 cm (4.3") x H 31 cm (12.2")

19th Century Pair of Antique Horticultural Black Forest Figures These very fine examples are of exhibition quality. Their scale, modelling, and superb artistry of carving are rare and difficult to find on the open market. They depict two rural figures and are of a large scale. The first is an 18th century male gardener dressed in typical European costume walking through trees and foliage whilst pushing a rustic wheelbarrow into which he is collecting cut flowers. Late 19th C Japanese carved hardwood okimono of a man, circa 1890 This top quality and most impressive large scale Japanese carved hardwood okimono superbly depicts a characterful study of a delightfully crafty looking man. He is dressed simply in a robe. On his back, he has a rolled woven mat for resting and a turtle shell sun hat hangs below. On his side hanging from his waist sash, there is a simple hand fan made from woven palm leaves and around his neck, he is wearing a string of very large beads.
