19th Century Blonde Polychrome Madonna

About the Item

This hand-carved wooden figure represents the Virgin Mary as a child (Niña María), a subject cherished in Spanish Colonial art. Originating from Guatemala, the sculpture features polychrome-painted surfaces, glass eyes, intricately carved blonde hair, and pierced ears—indicative of traditional adornment practices. Notably, all fingers are intact, which is uncommon for pieces of this age. The statue exhibits areas of paint loss, consistent with its age and devotional use, adding to its historical authenticity.​ She is absolutely stunning!
