About the Item

Superb sculpture in patinated bronze "The Large Lumberjack-Farmer" by Aimé-Jules DALOU (1838 - 1902), cast by Susse Frères, large model, 78cm high. Presence of the artist's signature, the signature and stamp of the foundry and the mention "lost wax". Excellent condition and sublime patina of time. Dimensions in cm ( H x D ) : 78 x 30 Sent by specialized carrier. Price to be determined based on buyer location. Aimé-Jules DALOU is one of the greatest sculptors of France of his time alongside Auguste RODIN. This farmer with his glance turned towards emptiness. He rolls up his sleeves, resigned to his work, wearing his wooden shoes which anchor him to the earth, his light and floating shirt, and in all his resilience, devotes himself to his task. In the secrecy of his workshop, Dalou wished to realize a monument to pay homage to the workers. He was to propose a column 32 meters high, overhung by this peasant rolling up his sleeves mimicking the beginning of work, starting from a base whose decorations in bas-reliefs had representations of workers exercising trades of the countryside and the city. The artist plunges us into an agricultural France now disappeared, which rises at the crowing of the rooster and debauches at sunset, that of factories and industry. Dalou's desire was to portray these workers without artifice or idealization. From this realistic view with great poetic force. Dalou had a deep admiration for the workers which he sought to manifest throughout his career. Bibliography: 'Jules Dalou, le Sculpteur de la République', cat. exp. An enigmatic late 19th Century bronze study of a seated female nude leaning on her knees, hiding her face, on integral naturalistic canted rectangular base, signed to one side DALOU above the cracked mirror (facing to the rear), the opposing side marked Susse Fres Edts the rear with Susse Freres pastille flanked by the letters H P and S.
