Antique Continental Bronze Napoleon Style Toothpick Holder

About the Item

Antique Continental Bronze Napoleon Style Toothpick Holder Continental Bronze Late 19th Century Dimensions: H x D: 15 x 7cm Toothpick holders rose to popularity in the 19th century, and this particular example is crafted from bronze. Cast in the form of a Napoleonic figure, it offers a whimsical take on a practical object. The elegantly dressed male figure leans slightly to one side, one hand resting on his hip, while the other holds an umbrella. The umbrella, which is open and pierced with small holes for storing toothpicks, adds both charm and functionality. The stepped, round base is cast to resemble a cobbled street, enhancing the lifelike character of the piece. Toothpicks have been used since prehistoric times, with early examples discovered in ancient graves in Egypt, Rome, and China. Initially crafted from precious metals and worn as part of jewellery, toothpicks were kept in ornate decorative cases by the 18th century. With the rise of the middle class and increasingly elaborate table settings during the Victorian era, dedicated toothpick holders like this one became fashionable. These objects were often displayed at the dining table, adding a playful and decorative touch. Blending utility with artistry, this antique toothpick holder is a delightful addition to any collection, particularly for enthusiasts of 19th century novelties or Napoleonic-themed objects.

Antique German Oxidised Metal Figurative Pen Holder By WMF, Circa 1900
Located in Greven, DE
This charming antique sculpture was crafted by WMF, short for Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik, a renowned German manufacturer of fine metalware founded in 1853 and still in operation today. While best known for its tableware designs, WMF also produced a variety of decorative objects, including sculptures, exemplified by this delightful piece from our collection. The sculpture depicts a young boy dressed in typical late 19th to early 20th century working-class attire, including a flat cap. An apron tied around his waist suggests he is at work - possibly as a florist, as implied by the large scrolls cradled in his arms. These scrolls were originally aimed to be used as pen holders but can also serve to display other small items. Finely cast, the sculpture features intricate details such as fabric folds and hair texture, all enhanced by its monochrome oxidised finish. The figure stands atop an ornate Rococo style base adorned with C-scrolls, which also serve as the feet of the piece. The base is stamped ‘WMFB’, indicating both the manufacturer and the use of Britannia metal. Below this is the ‘OX’ mark, denoting that the surface has been oxidised - a process in which recessed areas are chemically darkened while raised surfaces are polished to a matte finish using pumice. An indistinct ’18’ mark is also stamped on the base. Blending stylistic elegance with technical craftsmanship, this antique pen holder...
