About the Item

An antique Italian Neoclassical buff stoneware statue of Resting Satyr, after the antique. Dating circa 1880, this French sculpture is of a small scale in a desirable neutral tone, displayed in a strong stance showcasing the life like features of its subject and an exceptional sense of motion. This expertly handcrafted statue is mounted on a round integral base, making it perfect as a decorative display for interior use. Resting Satyr Known for its relaxed stance and tree trunk prop, the resting satyr has remained an iconic piece of Roman art. The stoneware piece we currently house is a depiction of the original, showing the young satyr resting against a tree trunk in its elegant pose. Also known as ‘The Faun of Praxiteles’, the original is thought to have been a marble statue by Praxiteles from around 340-330 BC, the satyr thought have been called ‘Periboëtos' in Roman mythology. It now resides in the Capitoline Museums, in Rome, Italy.

    Good structural condition. Stripped of paint. The forearm is made as a separate piece and a manufactured joint that has been reattached. Few chips to the base. Chip to the lower hand.

This impressive statue is a full-scale plaster cast of ‘The Apollo Belvedere’ made by the Louvre Museum workshops in the late 19th century. We have never seen a 19th century copy of this Renaissance Masterpiece of this size and are quite fortunate to be responsible for its stewardship until purchase by a discerning collector The original "Bacchus" is a marble sculpture by the master, Michelangelo, created circa 1496 when the artist was 21. This statue was originally commissioned by Cardinal Raffaele Riario. However, it was rejected by him and eventually found its way to Jacopo Galli, Cardinal Riario’s banker and a friend of the sculptor, who purchased it in 1506. Some 66 years later it was bought for the Medici and transferred to the royal house in Florence, Italy. Currently it can be viewed at the Museo Nazionale del Bargello in Florence.
