About the Item
Bronze print with multicolored patina (medal, brown, and green) signed José Cardona (1878-1922), a Spanish sculptor living in Paris during the Belle Époque. He received an honorable mention at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1906.
Cardona was inspired by a painting by the artist Eugene Pascau (1875-1944) entitled "The Schoolgirl," presented at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1905.
This work depicts a young child carrying a lunchbox and a book. Their small size makes them appear large.
Her face, enhanced by its beautiful medal patina, the child smiles. She turns her head and eyes to the left in an adorable pout.
Dressed in a headdress with small ruffles and a shawl covering her dress and school uniform, the little girl walks in her beautiful shoes.
The artist's signature is engraved on the base.
Its beautiful size and charm make this bronze a touching and charismatic work.
* Eugène Pascau is renowned as a genre and portrait painter; he was a student of Philippe Jolyet and Léon Bonnat.
Director of the Bayonne School of Painting, he participated in the Salon des Artistes Français and became a member in 1899.
He is exhibited at the Musée de Bayonne and the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
