Brutalist Elm Totem Sculpture by Sebastien Touret, France

About the Item

Large Brutalist Elm Totem Sculpture by Sebastien Touret, France Dimensions : H 203 x 32 x 43 cm The term brutalism — which derives from the French word brut, meaning “raw” — was originally coined to describe an architectural style that emerged in the 1950s featuring monumental buildings, usually made of unornamented concrete, whose design was meant to project an air of strength and solidity. Similarly, in furniture design Brutalism inspired designers to create models with the same look of strength and style. This one of the kind Sébastien Touret's elm sculpture is a beautiful example of this design movement, with a clear emphasis on the material’s natural qualities. This sculpture was created to appear as a human presence and designed with a strong architectural approach, and while it is very sturdy on first sight, the outstanding execution of the carves and the natural appeal of elm make this sculpture the embodiment of creative, elegant approach. Much like in architecture, brutalist sculpture has organic, unpolished shapes. The work of this piece exemplify this characteristic, with uneven edges, letting the natural qualities of the elm shine as a natural and elemental feeling.
