Early 20th Century Swiss Walnut Sculpture Composition Signed Carl Binder
About the Item
Decorate a man's study with this antique wooden sculpture composition signed by Swiss sculptor C. Binder and dated 1912.
Bought in France, and carved in one single block of walnut wood, the large composition depicts two men in traditional garb with arms around each other in a gesture of camaraderie. One man is wearing a turban and holding a cane, while the other sports a tall fur hat and has his arm draped over his companion’s shoulders. The expressive faces and dynamic posture convey a sense of storytelling, as if they are engaged in a moment of shared experience, perhaps reflecting on a journey or celebration. The rough-hewn texture of the sculpture adds a rustic, hand-crafted charm, emphasizing the artisan’s attention to detail in their clothing and facial features. The base shows visible carving marks, giving the piece a robust, earthy quality that aligns with the rustic themes of friendship and solidarity. The tall sculpture is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, and adorns a rich walnut patina.
Carl Binder (1881–1951) was a Swiss sculptor known for his work during the Art Nouveau period. Binder's artistic career garnered attention within Swiss and European circles, though information on his personal life and development as an artist is limited. His pieces have been auctioned internationally, emphasizing his relevance within the Art Nouveau and early 20th-century European art scenes. We believe this was sculpted in 1912 as it is signed "12" after the signature.

Victor Rousseau (1865-1954) was a Belgian sculptor and medalist. Rousseau was of Walloon heritage and descended from a line of stonemasons. He began carving stone at age 11, working at the site of the Law Courts of Brussels, designed by architect Joseph Poelaert. He later apprenticed under sculptor Georges Houtstont, and took classes at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels.
A winning competition entry for the Prix Godecharle in 1890 gave Rousseau the chance to travel in England, Italy, and two full years in France, after which he returned to the atelier of Belgian sculptor and teacher Charles van der Stappen...
