About the Item
Polychrome earthenware bust of Nantes sculptor Henriette Porson (1874–1963), created by the iconic HB factory, depicting a Bigouden grandmother.
The subject wears the traditional dress and headdress of the Pont-l'Abbé region, identifiable by their shimmering embroidery. These raised decorations, inspired by the lacework characteristic of the Bigouden region, are an innovation of the Quimper faience factory: it launched the "Embroidery Decor" at the end of the First World War.
The marks of time are visible on the model's face, giving her an austere expression. The artist has successfully transcribed the severity and rigor that were the lot of women during this period, imposed by Decency and Religion.
A vestige of a bygone era, this work is a touching testimony that will resonate with lovers of Breton culture.
