About the Item

A stunning French mid-19th century Neo-Classical st. Alabaster statue of Cupid and Psyche on its original Vert de Patricia marble pedestal. This statue is modeled after the original "Psyche Revived by Cupid's Kiss", by Antonio Canova (1757-1822) which can still be seen at the Louvre museum, in Paris. The statue is raised on its original Vert de Patricia marble pedestal column with an octagonal base with a fine mottled wrap around band and elegantly curved support. The lightly tapered circular central column leads up to the oblong display tier also displaying a fine mottled border. The exquisite wonderfully executed Alabaster statue above displays a beautiful ground designed base where Cupid is embracing Psyche. The statue depicts the mythological lovers at a moment of great emotion, a characteristic of the emerging movement of Romanticism. It represents Cupid, in the height of love and tenderness, immediately after awakening the lifeless Psyche with a kiss. Lovely subject matter and wonderful attention to detail throughout. Antonio Canova (1757 - 1822) was a renowned Italian sculptor and was known for his marble sculptures. Was regarded as the greatest of the Neo-Classical artists.
