About the Item

IMPORTANT VENUS ESQUILINE TERRACOTTA COPY 1:1 CLEOPATRA STATUE 1:1 reproduction in terracotta of the famous Esquiline Venus. Almost certainly the depiction of Cleopatra. HEIGHT 150 cm WIDTH 55 cm DEPTH 55 cm WEIGHT 52 kg RECTANGULAR BASE SIDE X SIDE 36 X 40 cm MANUFACTURING Tuscany MATERIAL Terracotta The Esquiline Venus is a Hellenistic sculpture in Parian marble (h. 155 cm) from the 1st century BC, preserved in the Capitoline Museums of Rome. The statue was found in 1874 on the Esquiline in the area near today's Piazza Vittorio, in an underground room of the Horti Lamiani, from which the portrait of Commodus as Hercules also comes. Interpreted at the time of discovery as Venus-Isis, more recently it was believed that it was a depiction of Cleopatra, dating back to the second half of the 1st century BC. According to this thesis, the cobra depicted on the vase represents the Ureus, symbol of Egyptian royalty. In the period from June to September 2008, the sculpture was exhibited at the Italian pavilion in the International Exhibition in Zaragoza (Spain) and became the main attraction of visitors to the pavilion. For the entire period it was guarded 24 hours a day by agents of the Financial Police. On January 27, 2016, on the occasion of Iranian President Hassan Rohani's important trip to Italy, the sculpture together with other works of art were covered with plywood panels. A copy is located in the Louvre museum. It represents a woman in the act of tying her hair (the fingers of her left hand are preserved on her collected hair, while her arms, raised, are lost) before plunging into the bath. The figure is naked except for sandals (a significant trait for recent interpretations given that Venus never wears sandals). The sculpture leans on a support that depicts a vase around which a cobra is coiled, on which a cloth is placed: the presence of the animal has made one think of a Roman representation of Cleopatra (furthermore the dating coincides with the years of the presence of Cleopatra VII in Rome). The statue reworks severe style models for her face and hair, while for her body it takes Hellenistic models and in particular the iconography of Aphrodite Anadyomene. The search for a naturalistic rendering of the female body is evident, indifferent to the canons of beauty applied to the figure of the goddess in traditional representations.
