Italian 19th century white Carrara marble statue entitled Indian Boy Hunting

About the Item

A charming and high quality Italian 19th century white Carrara marble statue entitled Indian Boy Hunting, signed Randolph Rogers, Rome, circa 1866. The young boy stands proudly next to a tree stump above a circular base with the etched signature. He is dressed in a tied loincloth which hangs around his waist while holding his bow in his left hand. His prize of a duck hangs by one leg from the cut tree, while a quiver full of arrows is tied at his torso with hanging hooves over his shoulders. The young boy gazes to his right, as though hearing something in the distance. He displays a charming expression with his hair tightly tied back by four leaves and a beaded band. Wonderful subject matter with intricate attention to detail throughout. Randolph Rogers (1825 - 1892) was born in New York and began to study sculpture in Florence in 1848, before opening his own studio in Rome in 1851, where he lived the rest of his life until is death in 1892. His most famous pieces include "Nydia, the Blind Flower Girl of Pompeii", and "The Genius of Connecticut" which adorned the state capitol of Connecticut in Hartford. In 1873 Rogers became the first American to to be elected to Italy's Accademia di San Luca, and he was knighted in 1884 by King Umberto I.
