About the Item
Considered by his contemporaries as one of the most distinguished and talented sculptors of his time, Pio Fedi, who produced many works for European monarchs, received his training from the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence under the guidance of renowned sculptor Lorenzo Bartolini (1777-1850). In the 1850s, he became the Court Sculptor of Grand Duke Leopold II (1797-1870) and was later named professor at the Accademia de Belle Arti in Florence and Academy of Vienna.
Raised on the classical Naturalism of Bartolini and formal Purity of Tenerani, Pio Fedi was able to evolve, and confront, the major elements which coincided with nineteenth century Italian sculpture. In later years, he took a somewhat romantic approach, and gradually turned towards a tempered and mature kind of Realism.
Reinterpreting neoclassical vocabulary and the theme of the Greek and Roman Eros, Fedi nevertheless offers a sweeter and more poetic vision, which is not unlike eighteenth century French art. (Fig. 1)
This statue, depicting a delightful Cupid forging the arrows of love, is thought to have been created between 1840 and 1850. The subject, with its reference to mythological and love-related themes, was highly attractive to wealthy customers who taste was geared toward the art of the past. It was intended to enrich the interiors of the era’s upper-class mansions.
A beautiful example is La Fiorentina in the Walker Art Gallery collection in Liverpool. Other works by the sculptor can be found in the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, the Galleria d’Arte Moderna di Palazzo Pitti, the portico of the Uffizi and the Loggia of Piazza Della Signoria in Florence.
