Japanese Tachibina (Imperial couple) doll set.

About the Item

Japanese Tachibina (Imperial couple), rare and exceptionally fine standing pair of figures for the Hina Matsuri. The emperor has his arms spread to the side and the empress is in cylindrical form. The faces are carved in the round Jirozaemon style. The textiles are a very refined tsuzure-ori tapestry weave of a deep red silk against a metallic gold background with pine, stream and wisteria patterns. The trousers and accents are of a rich gold kinran with foliate scroll designs. The couple are contained within a special wood display kimono tray with painted silk lining of a blossoming cherry tree. Included is the original wood presentation box. This set is probably an imperial commission. Excellent condition. 17” high. Meiji/Taisho Period, circa 1910.
