About the Item

An eye-catching and large scale early 20th century bronze figure depicting a hunter attributed to French sculptor, Jean de Roncourt (1869-1937). Though unsigned, this sculpture is undoubtedly by Roncourt, the design and figure evocative of his other works. Alternatively titled ‘Le Chasseur’ (translating to 'The Hunter'). Active throughout the 1920s and 30s, Jean de Roncourt was a French impressionist and modern sculptor. His works often featured athletic, masculine figures such as this one. Alternatively titled ‘The Javelin Thrower’, the bronze figure takes a stable, kneeling position with left foot extended forward. His right arm is angled back and holds in the fist a spear as if ready to launch forwards, throwing it into a target or prey ahead. The spear is original and detaches, allowing for positioning as you see fit. The bronze is mounted on a black marble plinth which in itself is 74 cm (29.13 in) wide, showcasing the sheer scale of the piece. It is a dramatic statement for an interior or collector, looking striking placed atop a console or sideboard in a contemporary or traditional setting. Additional Information Plinth base: 74 x 16 cm (29.13 x 6.29 in) Dimensions exclude the spear. Spear is 50 cm long.

F. Barbedienne 'The Solider of Marathon' Bronze After J. P. Cortot
By F. Barbedienne Foundry, Jean Pierre Cortot
Located in Wormelow, Herefordshire
An excellent large late 19th century antique bronze of ‘Le Soldat De Marathon Annoncant La Victoire’, also known as ‘The Soldier of Marathon Announcing the Victory’, cast by Ferdinand Barbedienne after a model by French sculptor, Jean-Pierre Cortot (1787-1843). The Barbedienne foundry produced this model in four editions. This bronze is an example of the second largest. Inscribed ‘Cortot 1834’, it is signed ‘F. Barbedienne Fondeur’ and impressed with the official stamp of the Collas et Barbedienne foundry reading: ‘Reduction Mecanique, A. Collas Brevete’. With its attractive patina and impressive scale, this bronze is a beautiful sculpture for any interior seeking artworks that are particularly exceptional. The Soldier of Marathon Inspiration for this bronze is rooted in ancient Greek mythology. It tells the story of the solider Pheidippides who, following the Greek victory at the Battle of Marathon in 490 BCE, ran 40km from Marathon to Athens to deliver the triumphant news before collapsing from exhaustion. The story inspires the modern-day marathon run...
