John W. Mills (1933-2023) Harlequinade Dancers Sculpture Maquette
About the Item
A large figurative sculpture depicting the two dancers, Harlequin and Columbine, by the acclaimed British sculptor, John W. Mills. Part of the artist’s ‘Harlequinade’ series, this is just one of various resin maquettes we are selling from the collection.
This stunning series was originally commissioned by P&O Cruises for ‘The Aurora’; the company’s oldest cruise ship, launched in the year 2000. The life-size sculptures, for which this series of dancing maquettes were modelled, were destined for the ship’s lavish ballroom where they would decorate the room’s internal niches.
An original maquette, this sculpture depicts the ballet partners together wearing masks, Columbine's arm around Harlequin in an embrace as they dance, the artist capturing the dancers in such a way that creates a sense of movement. Embellished details to their clothing add to the overall look of the piece, telling the story of the dancers in this theatrical love story.
Mounted onto a resin base, this dancer statue is perfect for decorative display in an interior or garden.
Price includes Artist’s Resale Rights (ARR) at 4%.

Robert Michiels (1933), iron sculpture
An iron sculpture in the shape of an animal head raised on a round base, made by Robert Michiels, Belgium, signed. In 1966 Robert received the Jeune Sculpture Belgium prize, the following year the Hainaut Prize and in 1969 first prizes at the Paris Biennale and the Antwerp Biennale Middelheim. Robert Michiels works with industrial components and materials. He uses them to build human characters, animals or strange insects, often with a touch of surrealism and humour. Because the material comes from our society, the works are reminiscent of New Realism and his sculptures are often described with the term existentialism. Because he often works with metal, Robert often uses a grinding wheel and welding machine...
