Amazing craftsmanship by one of the greatest, 19th century, German sculptors. Everybody has at least one talent and the talent of Julius Paul Schmidt-Felling (1835-1920) was creating sculptures of amazing quality and timeless beauty. From the very few alabaster sculptures by Schmidt-Felling that are known and available in the world, this is the largest one by far and it is both signed/engraved and inlaid with a small bronze or brass medal. This beautiful, impressive and elegant sculpture is not only great because of its workmanship and its look and feel, it also contains a message. This lady fisherman with an attitude (hence the arm in the side) is standing by her boat (which is tied to a bolder). She is holding a copper stick to fence off anyone even thinking about stealing her catch. This large alabaster sculpture is about female independence and about 'holding your own' and this lady really shines. Apart from an old repair to the back of the cap that she is wearing (see image 8), this sculpture is in amazing condition. It is a wonderful eye-catcher by a sculptor who, in this day and age would have been world famous, because where can you find craftsman nowadays who are capable of creating this kind of beauty.
