Large Well Patinated 19th Century Bronze of Neopolitan Dancer - by Duret c. 1880

A very fine original bronze group of lovebirds by the French sculptor Jules Moigniez (b. 1835 d. 1984) Moigniez studied in Paris under Comolera and exhibited first at the Exposition Universelle of 1865. He received a medal at the Great Exhibition of London in 1862 and his bird sculptures earned him first place in this field. A particularly good quality copper and brass fire fender with beautiful and elaborately cast sinuous solid brass corner spandrels of Art Nouveau design and a lovely planished copper front panel all set on flattened and beaded brass bun feet. In excellent original condition without damage and of a good large size, and with only minor and superficial marks and small dings consistent with age and careful use. In the 19th century most of the rooms in a house had a chimney for open fires and the fender would be placed to denote the hearth and stop logs rolling off and reaching the rug or soft furnishings.
