About the Item

This heavy centerpiece bowl dates to the late 19th century and is composed of cast iron with a gilt finish. The bowl has a shallow basin made up of a series of detailed open poppy blossoms and features a sleeping maiden curled up at one side. The bowl rests on an ornate dimensional foliate base. A lovely example of Art Nouveau metal ware.

This late 19th century porcelain vase was designed by Eduard Stellmacher for Riessner, Stellmacher & Kessel Amphora of Turn-Teplitz, Bohemia. The piece has a Classic Art Nouveau form and features a dimensional nymph partially encased in the leaves of a lily of the valley plant. The maiden's body is accented by two delicate arched tendrils finished in gilt which bear small white lily of the valley blossoms, also accented in gilt. The remainder of the piece is painted in shades of light green and ochre with gilt highlights. An example of this shape with similar painted decoration can be seen on page 37 of Richard L. Scott's 'Ceramics From The House Of Amphora 1890-1915.' As an antique item, the vase shows appropriate signs of age consisting of wear to the gilded decoration along with a shallow chip on one of the ridged leaves on the back of the piece. This exceptional late 19th century three-piece French garniture includes two footed urns and a low footed centerpiece bowl. The urns and bowl are composed of patinated bronze with ormolu mounts which include neoclassical mask detail and rest on square marble plinths with ormolu bases. The pieces have distinctive elongated handles at the sides which terminate in stylized pendant decoration. As seen in the accompanying photographs, the exterior of the urns and bowl feature applied bronze decoration in the form of ornate foliate swags with flowers. Please be sure to zoom in on the photos to better appreciate the detail of the cast decoration, it is impressive. The urns stand 15.75" tall as measured to the top of the rims.
