Late 19th Century French Carved Oak Statuary of Saint Mary Magdalene

About the Item

This large antique "Marie Madeleine" statue was crafted in France, circa 1890; the figure depicts Saint Mary Magdalene (or Maria Magdalena) standing and holding a jar of ointment in her left hand. The tall religious sculpture is in excellent condition with a rich patina with exceptional details especially the drape, her hair and facial and hands features. For centuries artists have portrayed Marie Madeleine with her sacred vessel, that has been depicted as a variety of receptacles. For example, in 1317 the medieval Italian painter Simone Martini depicted it as a spice pot; in 1525 the Italian Renaissance artist Bernardino Luini depicted it as a perfume jar; and in 1859 the English Pre-Raphaelite painter Frederick Sandys depicted it as an ointment cup. Originally called the Marian Chalice, meaning the Chalice of Mary Magdalene, Mary's sacred vessel was believed to have been sealed up in Jesus’ empty tomb where it remained for almost four hundred years. After the Roman emperor Constantine, the Great converted to Christianity in the early 4th century, his mother the Empress Helena ordered the excavation of the Holy Sepulchre, the purported site of Christ’s tomb in Jerusalem. During the excavation a cup was found which many believed to be the Marian Chalice. It was taken to Rome where it was believed to possess miraculous healing powers. Everybody can decide for themselves why Mary Magdalene went into Jesus' tomb, and what she did there. In visual arts Mary Magdalene's jar was portrayed as "the alabaster jar of Bethania", containing anointing oil for Jesus, but at the same time it was a symbol for the Holy Grail which supposedly contained Jesus' blood. Mid-18th Century French Carved Polychrome Statue of Moses in Oak Niche

Crafted in France circa 1760 and resting in a carved oak niche, the figure depicts the prophet Moses, the most important prophet in Judaism and Christianity. Moses is best known from the story in the biblical Book of Exodus and Quran as the lawgiver who met God face-to-face on Mount Sinai to receive the Ten Commandments after leading his people, the Hebrews, out of bondage in Egypt and to the "promised land" of Canaan. He is represented with horns on top of his head. The horns came about because of an ambiguity of the Latin version of Exodus 34, 30. After being addressed by God on top of Mount Sinai and given the Tablets of the Law containing the Ten Commandments, Moses descended to his people in the desert.
