Antique (late 19th to early 20th century) patinated bronze sculpture entitled Excelsior after the original model by Emile Louis Picault (French, 1833-1915), measuring 46 by 18 by 22 inches, electrified with three standard size sockets, and unique and rare floral shaped frosted glass shades. With modern wiring and cord, ready for use. Signed in the cast E Picault.
In this allegory of the progress of science and mankind, Excelsior (Latin for ever upward/higher) depicts the Roman goddess, Victoria (Victory), symbolizing science and progress, stands triumphantly over a man on the ground, lighting the way with her torch.
