"The Man of the New Era", Socialist Realism Work by Mihai Vatamanu, circa 1960s.

About the Item

Impressive sculpture realized in Baschioi-stone by Mihai Vatamanu in the manner of the 60's in Eastern Europe. The Baschioi stone is a famous Romanian unique sandstone known and used for the last 1000 years (Bucharest Royal Palace was entirely buil on it). This work, a man with a very strong facial expression, is representative of the Socialist Realism Style the predominant form of approved art in the Eastern Europe from its development in the early 1920s to its eventual fall from popularity in the late 1960s. The main characteristic of the Socialist realism was to exibite the positive hero who must become by his behavior the model for the man of a new era. Despite their austere appearance and the ideological character, Vatamanu's works are reminiscent of the cubism movement appeared in Europe at the same period as the Socialist Realism Style, with the characteristic features that define it and that made it so well know through the works of great artists such as, for example, Picasso, Archipenko, Csaky or Modigliani. Provenance: Sculptor's own workshop Vatamanu. born in 1929 in Hotin/Chotyn - Ukraine, was a sculptor and painter, teacher to the Art School of Constanta- Romania. References: Vlasiu, Joana (ed.).
