Meissen Gorgeous Group of Figurines called 'The Drunken Silen', circa 1870 Measures / dimensions: Height: 21.5 cm (= 8.46 inches) Width: 20.0 cm (= 7.87 inches) Depth: 14.0 cm (= 5.51 inches) Manufactory: Meissen Hallmarked: Blue Meissen Sword Mark (underglazed) First quality Model number 2724 Painter's number 68 / Former's Number 120 Dating: made circa 1870 Material: porcelain, glossy finish, multicolored painted Technique: handmade porcelain Style: Rococo style, designed by Ernst August Leuteritz (1818-1893) / modelled circa 1849-1853 Specifications: -- The Meissen model of Drunken Silen had been probably first created by Friedrich Elias Meyer, this group was first time produced before the year 1760. There were at least two variants of this group existing in 18th century, one created by Meyer, the other one was possibly modelled by Johann J. Kaendler. - A further model had been made by Leuteritz during the years 1849 - 53: The figurine group we're offering here is the Leuteritz edition. -- The Drunken Silen (the story about this Greek Mythological Figurine had already been described by the Roman poet Publius Vergilius Maro / in the Bucolica 6) is sitting on a donkey; he is accompanied by a female as well as a male figurine - the last one (a tosspot) supports Silen so that he can't fall from donkey. The handsome nymph sprawling herself out on earth holds wine leaves in her right raised hand; beside her there is a basket filled with grapes of wine and leaves visible. A cherub sitting behind the donkey is grasping the animal's tail. -- The figurine group is supported by oval rocky base which is edged with Rocaille ornaments. The figurines' painting as well as modelling are of finest quality: Look at various details, for example (at the figurines' features as well as at their muscles, at the wine wreaths attached to figurines' head, at the donkey's lovely impression).
