About the Item

Large bronze representing the Death of the Duke of Clarence during a tournament: beautiful brown patina, the large quantity of details of precision and finesse make this sculpture lively and dynamic. The base in the Gothic style in carved wood, is decorated with coats of arms, and cartouches relating this historical episode of the Hundred Years' War; the portout of the base bears the title "Death of Monseigneur the Duke of Clarence, Brother of the English King Henry V occi in the battle of Vieil Beauge by Grant de Fontaine, Knight in the host of Monseigneur the Dauphin - Chronicles of Albion" The Duke of Clarence, son of Henry V of England, here recognizable by the crown he wears on his helmet, faces the knight Garin de Fontaine, representing the house of Anjou. His rearing horse and broken lance indicate that he will soon lose this tournament. This model was created in 1838 by Alfred Emile de Nieuwerkerke (1811-1892): a student of James Pradier, it is one of his most famous creations. Several models can be found, with nuances, such as at the Musée du Château de Blois or at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. Sculpture not bearing the artist's signature, but the foundry stamp oskar Gladenbeck GMBH (Berlin, Germany). Good general condition, slight wear to the patina (on the base), some elements constituting the horses' bards (reins, etc.) are missing.
