About the Item
This listing features a bronze lost wax cast sculpture of a mountain man on a rocky mountain with his horse, likely part of the fur trade, which reached its peak in the 1830s and 1840s. He is emulating the heroic stature as the quintessential Euro-American Westerner, which was later envisioned to the modern cowboy. "The Mountain Man" depicts a dramatic moment in the daily life of a buckskin-clad trapper in which he and his mount work together to descend a precarious slope, harmoniously prevailing over the dangerous wilderness.
This piece was cast by New York's Roman Bronze Works foundry in the lost-wax technique and sits on top of a marble base, with a signed metal piece by the artist.
Federic Sackrider Remington was an American painter, illustrator, and sculptor who specialized in the genre of Western American Art. Such works would depict cowboys, Native Americans, and the US Cavalry.
