About the Item

Pair of large 17th century Italian hand-carved and gilded angels with mica wings adorned with dynamically applied selenite and citrine crystals and mounted on lucite bases. These angels are from a church in Tuscany and would have originally been on either side of the church altar. The angels wear a silver leaf robe while their bodies are gilded. Due to age, their wings have been displaced, but have been replicated with coordinating naturally forming mica wings. An organic selenite crystal replaces one arm. Each hand also holds natural citrine crystals. Missing parts of the toes have also been replaced with faceted citrine crystals. Each figure stands on a lucite base. The pair was put together by Jean O'Reilly Barlow, the artist and creative director of Interi. The date of manufacture reflects when she transformed the pieces with the minerals and the period shows that the Italian angels are originally 17th century. The combination of the rare and unusual angelic figures with the natural forming elements brings together a unique organic sculptural pair. The elements create a pair that appears to have evolved together over time. Through the preservation of the ecclesiastical artifacts, they still carry historical prominence while being transformed and mounted with the natural specimens to create a sculptural and figurative pair of organic and old.
