Pair of French 19th Century Bronze Statues of Mercury and Fortuna

About the Item

A stunning and high quality true pair of French 19th century Louis XVI st. patinated bronze, ormolu and black Belgian marble statues of Mercury and Fortuna, after a model by Louis Guillaume Fulconis signed Jean de Boulogne and Clodion. Each statue is raised by a circular stepped black Belgian marble base below a striking and richly chased wrap around ormolu band. The band displays charming richly chased cherubs playing and sculpting statues. Above are the patinated bronze statues of Fortuna and Mercury with ormolu accents. Mercury is standing on a gust of wind blown by Zephyrus and holds an ormolu caduceus. Fortuna is standing on her Rota Fortunae (wheel of fortune) and holds an ormolu cornucopia. Mercury was the god of financial gain, commerce, eloquence, communication, divination, travelers, luck, trickery and thieves; he also serves as the guide of souls to the underworld. Fortuna was the goddess of fortune and the personification of luck in Roman religion.
