About the Item
Pair of patinated bronze Native American figures after Kauba
Austrian, Early 20th Century
Brave figure: Height 31cm, width 16cm, depth 19cm
Chieftain figure: Height 28cm, width 16cm, depth 14cm
This pair of cold-painted and patinated bronze figures were made by Alfonzo Titze, cast from models by Carl Kauba (1865-1922), who was a removed Austrian artist particularly known for his patinated bronze depictions of the Wild West.
The bronzes portray a pair of Native Americans, each one standing on a rough-hewn deep red marble base.
The first figure portrays a Native American warrior, called a brave. Leaning forward his mouth is open as if he is shouting. A small feather headdress ornaments the figure's head. Vibrant red frills are decorating parts of the trousers and shirt, an animal fur boa, as well as a yellow, blue, and white scarf covering his body.
The chieftain who is portrayed in the second figure is wearing traditional Native American clothing and, on his head, rests a stunning feather headdress. Yellow, green, and red details accentuate the different elements of the headdress. His posture suggests he is attempting to listen to something, perhaps to the male from the first figure. The underside of one of his shoes is stamped with a circled ‘AT’ foundry mark.
A complex manufacturing technique was used to manufacture this superb pair of patinated bronze figures, and its design makes them a desirable addition to the appropriate interior setting.

Pair of patinated bronze figures after Giambologna
French, late 19th Century
Mercury: Height 84cm, width 17cm, depth 31cm
Fortuna: Height 84.5cm, width 17cm, depth 29cm
The patinated bronze figures are pictured in the nude, adopting active poses. Both stand on their tiptoes on one foot — Fortuna resting on a scrolling base, and Mercury on a gust of wind, produced by Zephyrus, the god of the western wind — and their other leg is flicked back. In both, one arm is raised, and the other rests at their side.
The figures stand on cylindrical yellow marble bases, which are ringed with continuous relief panels, depicting cherubs at the helm of sailing ships, and navigating using globes...
