About the Item
Pair of patinated bronze sculptures of Fortuna and Mercury after Giambologna
French, Late 19th Century
Mercury: Height 190cm, width 46cm, depth 92cm
Fortuna: Height 169cm, width 49cm, depth 108cm
This striking pair of large, patinated bronze sculptures portrays the iconic Classical Roman figures of Mercury and Fortuna. They are inspired by the masterpieces of the renowned Italian artist Giambologna (1529–1608) crafted in the 16th century.
Mercury, the messenger of the gods, is supported by a gust of wind emerging from the mouth of a mask depicting Zephyrus, the god of the west wind. He leans forward, his right arm extended above his head while holding the caduceus, a symbol of peace, in his other hand. Mercury is adorned with the classic emblems of his identity: a winged hat and winged sandals.
Fortuna is elegantly captured balancing on one leg atop a wheel, surrounded by crashing waves. In a pose similar to that of Mercury, she holds a cornucopia in her left hand. Her body is draped in flowing robes, and her curly hair is crowned with a decorative hairband.
These exceptional antique sculptures would make an impressive addition to any interior or exterior setting.

French, late 19th Century
Mercury: Height 84cm, width 17cm, depth 31cm
Fortuna: Height 84.5cm, width 17cm, depth 29cm
The patinated bronze figures are pictured in the nude, adopting active poses. Both stand on their tiptoes on one foot — Fortuna resting on a scrolling base, and Mercury on a gust of wind, produced by Zephyrus, the god of the western wind — and their other leg is flicked back. In both, one arm is raised, and the other rests at their side.
The figures stand on cylindrical yellow marble bases, which are ringed with continuous relief panels, depicting cherubs at the helm of sailing ships, and navigating using globes...

Measures: Figure with lyre: Height 92cm, width 48cm, depth 38cm
Other figure: Height 90cm, width 52cm, depth 33cm
The spelter works in this pair are after two of the leading Art Nouveau period sculptors: George Maxim and Auguste Moreau. The sculptures portray young women in animated, dance-like postures, wearing flowing dress that recalls Greek wet drapery. One figure holds a musical instrument, while the other spreads her arms as if to music. The figures stand on integral rocky bases above matching marble plinths. Each piece is affixed with a plaque, one reading ‘Libellule par Geo Maxim...
