Pair of Patinated Bronze Sculptures of Fortuna and Mercury after Giambologna

About the Item

Pair of patinated bronze sculptures of Fortuna and Mercury after Giambologna French, Late 19th Century Mercury: Height 190cm, width 46cm, depth 92cm Fortuna: Height 169cm, width 49cm, depth 108cm This striking pair of large, patinated bronze sculptures portrays the iconic Classical Roman figures of Mercury and Fortuna. They are inspired by the masterpieces of the renowned Italian artist Giambologna (1529–1608) crafted in the 16th century. Mercury, the messenger of the gods, is supported by a gust of wind emerging from the mouth of a mask depicting Zephyrus, the god of the west wind. He leans forward, his right arm extended above his head while holding the caduceus, a symbol of peace, in his other hand. Mercury is adorned with the classic emblems of his identity: a winged hat and winged sandals. Fortuna is elegantly captured balancing on one leg atop a wheel, surrounded by crashing waves. In a pose similar to that of Mercury, she holds a cornucopia in her left hand. Her body is draped in flowing robes, and her curly hair is crowned with a decorative hairband. These exceptional antique sculptures would make an impressive addition to any interior or exterior setting.
