About the Item
Extraordinarily powerful and poignant, this sculpture depicts a powerful nude helmeted soldier carrying and pulling his brother to safety after a serious injury on the battlefield. Both figures are nude, and the relationship brings to mind equally powerful Biblical scenes such as the descent from the cross, or pietàs that are signature works by great artists such as Michelangelo. Donald De Lue sculpted this for a war memorial that was never built, and was guided by John Harbeson, consulting architect to the American Battle Monuments Commission, who stated that memorials to World War II should embody the “sacrifice motive,” rather than the “glory motive” of war. De Lue's distinctive sculptures -- usually depicting nude, slender figures with exaggerated, Mannerist musculature -- changed very little from the 1930s to the 1970s. The artist apprenticed with Boston sculptor Richard Recchia, studied with Bela Pratt and served as chief assistant to Bryant Baker before he launched an independent career. De Lue's first major commission was a set of powerful relief sculpture for the Federal courthouse and post office in downtown Philadelphia, which command the street to this day. He also sculpted the Boy Scout Memorial in Washington, D.C., the Rocket Thrower for the 1964 New York World's Fair, and many other monuments and relief sculptures across America. This piece was sculpted in 1950, and later cast under De Lue's supervision by the Tallix bronze foundry in 1986. The piece is signed on the base, and is mounted on its original marble base.

Donald De Lue
Donald De Lue was born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1897. He was an American sculptor, best known for his public monuments. De Lue studied at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and later served as an assistant to sculptors Richard Henry Recchia and Robert P. Baker. This was followed by five years in Paris where he continued his study, while working as an assistant to various French artists. He returned to the United States where he was engaged by Bryant Baker. In 1940, he was elected into the National Academy of Design as an Associate member and became a full Academician in 1943.

"Allegory of Speed, " Art Deco Bronze Depicting the Ecstasy of Athletic Effort
Located in Philadelphia, PA
Large, rare and dramatic, this Art Deco bronze by Robert Delandre, circa 1930, depicts three nude male athletes all straining to reach the finish line of the race, their arms straining forward to win, and upward in ecstatic joy. The concentration and focus evident in their faces, and the beauty of their physiques, is beautifully captured by the artist, and the bronze is gorgeously finished in a green-brown patina that brings out the details of each figure. Delandre is largely known for his tabletop bronzes for the home or office, but he also entered competitions for public monuments and memorials. His most famous work is the "Monument to the Latham 47 Heroes" in Caudebec en Caux, France. The sculpture honors the men who disappeared in the prototype of the Latham 47 twin engine airplane in 1928, with Roald...
