Royal Worcester Scarce Majolica Figural Spill Holder c.1865

About the Item

A scarce and delightful antique English majolica pottery man carrying a sack spill holder by Royal Worcester and dating from around 1865. The well potted figure stands raised on a wide round pedestal base with molded stepped edge with a grasslike surface and with a tree stump supporting the man who supports a large open sack on his back and head. The man is dressed in trousers, open jacket and shirt and wears a wide brimmed hat on his head. He has well detailed features and is hand painted in typical bright majolica colors in yellow, brown, blue, green and turquoise with lighter painted face and hands. The recessed base has an impressed Royal Worcester mark. Provenance: from the private collection of a gentleman and acquired from the UK art market. In good condition with a couple of glaze roughs to the rim of the hat and some light age rubbing to the base.
