Sergio de Giusti Modernist Contemporary Biomorphic Ceramic Face Mask Sculpture

About the Item

A modernist contemporary painted ceramic sculpture depicting a biomorphic face or mask-like form by Detroit artist Sergio De Giusti. A fascinating composition where the face seems to emerge from an abstracted form. Displayed hanging on a minimal wire. A unique statement in a modern or contemporary setting. Per the artist, "Working in relief sculpture and focusing on the human figure; perhaps more so on the human condition. As an Italian born artist I have been very strongly influenced by the tradition of modern Italian relief sculpture by artists Giacomo Manzú and Emilio Greco. I continue that tradition in my art work. My classically expressionistic images are inspired by the passion and emotions of the Baroque and Hellenistic periods. I draw from an endless variety of symbols that record and depict the history of mankind. In my work I try to create images that evoke fantasies of tomb sculptures, slabs, columns, commemorative stones, architectural fragments and the anthropological rituals from many different cultures. Imagery ranging from eroded temples to operatic staging. Many of the sculpted figures and head fragments are wrapped in bandages; a reference to funeral shrouds, and religious iconography. Wrapped thus, the figures are suspended in a moment of time." From a private collection. Dimensions: 8.5"h x 9.5"w x 5.5"d. In very good condition. Sergio De Giusti (1941- ) work has been widely exhibited in both the United States and Europe in such places as The Detroit Institute of Arts; The Newark Museum; The Tampa Museum; The Smithsonian; The British Museum in London, England; The Minnesota Museum of Art; The Council of Cultural Affairs in Stockholm, Sweden; The Hungarian National Gallery in Budapest, Hungary and at The Institute of Culture in Zacatecas, Mexico. He has produced bronze panels for the doors of The Church of San Vito in Maniago, Italy and designed official medallions for The Department of The Treasury in Washington DC. In Detroit, De Giusti has created relief sculptures for the Italian Consulate offices, a commemorative relief for the Rick Finley United States Drug Enforcement Administration Building; a bronze relief for the Law School Building at Wayne State University; a bronze sculpture of General Anthony Wayne for Wayne State University’s Centennial Courtyard; a triptych for the Italian Heritage Room at Wayne State University; a memorial sculpture for The Wellness Health Center; a nine foot bronze free-standing relief for the main plaza of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Michigan building; and the bronze Christ figure for the processional cross used at the Silverdome Mass during the Pope’s visit to Detroit in 1988. Most recently, De Giusti has finished 29 bronze reliefs for The Labor Legacy Monument in Hart Plaza also in downtown Detroit.
