Made of cement mortar with the addition of an ancient wrought iron spear. HEIGHT 184 cm WIDTH 55 cm DEPTH 60 cm WEIGHT 332 kg MANUFACTURING Tuscany MATERIAL Concrete and wrought iron Base: 62cm Total: 246cm Neptune (in Latin Neptūnus) is a divinity of the Roman religion, god of waters and currents and later became, after 399 BC, the god of the sea and earthquakes, transforming himself into the equivalent of the Greek god Poseidon, and already Cicero in His treatise On the Nature of the Gods describes it thus: «…The first kingdom, that is, the dominion over the entire sea, was entrusted to Neptune, who according to tradition is the brother of Jupiter and whose name is an expansion of the verb nare…» (Marcus Tullius Cicero, De natura deorum, II, 66) Despite the fact that his cult developed after his association with Poseidon, Neptune was always less popular among sailors than Poseidon was among the Greeks. According to mythology he lived at the bottom of the sea and commanded sea monsters and storms. He is often represented standing on a chariot pulled by sea horses, and with a trident in his right hand as a symbol of command. He was honored on July 23, with the festivities of the Neptunalia, which were then joined by the ludi Neptunialicii (from the 3rd century BC). His temple was located in the Circo Flaminio inside the Campus Martius in Rome. In Roman mythology he had an associated divinity (paredra) sometimes called Salacia and sometimes Venilia. Neptune, lord of the sea and waters, gave its name to Neptunism, a theory proposed by the German geologist Abraham Gottlob Werner in the 18th century, according to which all rocks had marine origins. Epithet of Neptune/Poseidon was Enosìctono or Enosigeo (lat. Ennosigaeum. Neptune is also inspired by the name of the seaside city of the same name in the province of Rome, located between the Roman countryside and the Pontine countryside, where there is a fountain depicting him in the center of the city.
