Theater Mask by Wolfgang Utzt in treated Leather for the Play "Ragtime", 1992

About the Item

This striking theater mask by German artist Wolfgang Utzt was crafted in 1992 for a production of the play Ragtime. Expertly formed from treated leather, the mask embodies Utzt’s distinctive approach to theatrical design—combining traditional craftsmanship with expressive, character-driven form. The leather has been carefully shaped and dyed to create a dramatic, sculptural presence, emphasizing emotion and movement on stage. Its rich texture and meticulous detailing highlight the artisan’s skill and understanding of performance needs, ensuring both visual impact and wearability. Created specifically for Ragtime, a play known for its themes of identity and transformation, the mask serves as both a functional costume piece and a work of art. A rare example of contemporary theatrical craftsmanship, this piece reflects the creativity and technical precision of Wolfgang Utzt’s contributions to modern stage design. Frank Hörnig says: "Wolfgang Utzt is a legend among make -up artist. As a cordial companion to directors such as Benne Besson, Friedo Solter, Alexander Lang, Thomas Langhoff, Heiner Müller, Robert Wilson or Jürgen Gosch, he participated in many important productions at the Deutsche Theater Berlin and other theaters. His make-ups, figurines, graphics and mask designs have made theaters history. They contain an aesthetic dimension, a "self-determination" that makes them exceptional, entirely individual symbols and expressions of a cultural history of modern times." A unique piece which is a great eye-catcher for your antique, modern, space age or mid-century interior. If you have any more questions we are very happy to help and send you more details, photos, videos, a shipping quote or information. All pieces are looked after in our own restoration workshop.
