Grand Tour Souvenir Bronze "Venus Callipygian" after the Antique

About

This graceful tabletop bronze figure with its black patina depicts the "Venus Callipygian" after the antique marble Roman statue, itself done after the original Greek Hellenistic bronze sculpture, which has been lost. Here Venus (or the Greek Aphrodite) reveals her buttocks and looks over her shoulder, an erotic pose known in the cult of Aphrodite. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the Roman version was on display only for private viewing. This is a grand tour souvenir purchased in the nineteenth century at a tourist site near the Roman statue's venue, the Naples National Archeological Museum. There is also a lifesize marble copy of the statue in the gardens of Versailles. There is slight rubbing of the black patina on the right thigh and other small areas where the bronze color shows through, but it is not a major issue.
