English Plaster Lion Head Roundel on Stand

Dating from the 1850s, this carved limestone antique plaque depicts the head of a lion within hand carved chain links, some of which have been lost through the ages. It is more than 170 years old and likely once formed part of a larger piece together with this matching plaque. Perhaps it was once part of a keystone above an entranceway or a family crest wall decoration in the prestigious courtyard of a large estate. In classic architecture, a large patera (or paterae plural) like this would have once embellished a frieze or wall of a prominent building or house. This oval patera is a beautiful example of 18th century architecture, showcasing ornate details of the period. It is made in Coade stone, a famous and innovative material of its time, developed by industry pioneer Mrs Eleanor Coade.
