Pair of Italian 19th century Marble plaques or Mars and Minerva

About the Item

An attractive and most decorative true pair of Italian 19th century Gris St. Anne and white Carrara Marble plaques or Mars and Minerva. The two wonderfully carved circular white Carrara Marble plaques depict Marte (Mars) and Minerva set on a mottled Gris St. Anne marble backplates. Mars embodies the martial aspects of conflict and is associated with strength, aggression, and military power. He is depicted in armor, symbolizing his role as a protector of Rome. Minerva is the goddess of wisdom, warfare, and the arts, and she corresponds to the Greek goddess Athena. She is depicted wearing a helmet, emphasizing her warrior aspect, but she is also a symbol of knowledge, education, and the arts, making her a multifaceted deity. Together, Mars and Minerva illustrate the Roman ideals of strength balanced with wisdom, representing different aspects of conflict and knowledge in Roman culture.
