About the Item
A stunning patinated bronze sculpture of an orchid by renowned artist William Jauquet, created in 1988. This exquisite piece is signed and numbered discreetly on the verso of one of the leaves, marked 5 out of a limited edition of 25—a notably low edition size that makes it exceptionally rare. To date, no other examples from this edition have appeared at auction, underscoring its scarcity.
William Jauquet, a distinguished French sculptor born in 1928, is celebrated for his delicate and poetic bronze works that often explore nature’s fragility and beauty. Throughout his career, Jauquet masterfully captured organic forms with an elegance that balances realism and abstraction, earning him acclaim in the world of contemporary sculpture.
This orchid is cast using the ancient lost wax process (cire perdue), a meticulous technique where a detailed wax model is encased in a refractory mold, then melted away to create a precise cavity for molten bronze. This process allows for extraordinary detail and subtle textures—essential for conveying the fragility and intricacy of a flower in a medium as enduring as bronze.
The transformation of a delicate orchid into bronze lends the ephemeral flower a sense of permanence and immortality. Unlike real flowers that wilt and fade, this sculpture will never die, symbolizing enduring beauty, resilience, and the eternal nature of art itself.
Jauquet’s exceptional craftsmanship is evident in the flawless finishing and seamless chasing of the casting, where no joint or mold line is visible. This flower is considered one of his best pieces, marrying technical mastery with profound symbolism, making it a treasured work for collectors and admirers of fine bronze sculpture.
