Malet is an artist who works with precious, non-precious, found metals and recycled metal containers, creating art works that are inspired by the rich textures, colours and sculpted shapes of natural forms and landscapes.
Surrounded by her subject matter, Malet lives and works in rural Herefordshire in the UK. Her studio overlooks orchards, hills and woodland, in what can only be described as the perfect setting for her. She spends much of her time walking, looking at the surrounding terrain and the details within it, observing its changes throughout the year. Other landscapes, coastal paths and beaches also offer differing areas to explore and examine. However, none of these observations are about trying to copy nature, Malet’s aim is to capture a sense of it and create her response to it.
Malet is particularly drawn to vessel forms from the organic to the manmade. They are one of the most basic and universal of objects, which can be found in use for daily mundane tasks yet also play vital roles at occasions of celebration and honour.
In her owns words;
‘‘'Vessels’ found in nature for example, catching the eye of the beachcomber, have done their job, briefly becoming relics before decay continues the constant cycle of production. Through my on-going work with ‘found’ metal cans, I am exploring ideas of production, transformation, renewal through decay and reuse, and of perceived value; taking a throw-away, manmade, mass-produced food-can, I ‘transform’ it into a ‘precious’ vessel; each piece inspired by an element of the natural world: a battered rock formation, dancing light and shadow in woodland. In contrast, when working in silver, I make pieces which often focus on objects ‘discarded’ by nature: a curl of split bark, a seed pod. In doing so, I make pieces, which by using a precious material, ‘transform’ and draw attention to the value of a ‘throw-away’ and often transient object from nature. My objective is to make pieces that celebrate and notice the relationship between the natural environment and the extraordinary materials it provides”
Malet's works can be found in many museums and galleries including the V&A, National Museum Wales and the Manchester Art Gallery.

Claire Malet
Claire Malet is a metal and silversmith artist based in Herefordshire. Her work is a response to the relationship between the natural environment and the resources it provides, our use of them and their perceived value. Claire's work is inspired by the shapes and textures of natural forms and landscapes: fragments of sea-worn shells, the rock formations of a battered coastline, a curl of split bark, the dancing light, and shadow of woodland. She also draws inspiration directly from the characteristics of the materials used, allowing the medium to suggest a direction and to find a relationship with the subject matter. Claire works mainly with recycled metals: silver, steel, aluminium, and uses a variety of making techniques, but ‘feeling the way’ and experimenting is key in her practice. This approach allowing the materials to reveal their character and welcome the unexpected. Claire’s work can be found in public collections such as Victoria & Albert Museum, National Museum Wales, Manchester Art Gallery, and Bilston Craft Gallery.

Tall Black Dehydrated Form No 63, vessel by Artist Nicholas Arroyave-Portela
By Nicholas Arroyave-Portela
Located in London, GB
'Tall Black Dehydrated Form No 63’ is a unique sculptural vessel by the British artist, Nicholas Arroyave-Portela.
Nicholas Arroyave-Portela’s professional ceramic practice began in 1994. After 20 years based in London, he moved and set up his studio in Barcelona, Spain.
Arroyave-Portela's creations are all thrown on the wheel using his own unique technique. Pulling up as much clay from the bottom mass as possible, the clay walls of each piece are created thin and even, maximising the artist’s ability to manipulate the form while the material is still soft and malleable. Additional porcelain slips are sometimes applied to create further surface textures and layering. After the first initial bisque firing (1080 degrees) glazes are applied by using various methods such as spraying and pouring, a process often repeated several times after each firing of 1260 degrees. The multi-firing process allows for the build-up of the glaze, creating a rich palette of tones and finishes.
Arroyave-Portela's works can be found in various major museums and private collections worldwide including the Ashmolean Museum (Oxford UK...

The ability to create objects lies in the tradition in our hands. In ancient times, they were our only means of realising our thoughts. Artisan is the one with this ability to breathe life into the raw material. Since Samuel Constantin was a young boy has tried to create the objects of his imagination.
