About the Item
This exceedingly rare and exceptional fossil plate showcases a significant discovery of a ray fish [Rhinobatos hakelensis] and Sawfish [Libanopristis hiram], both complete and preserved with exceptionally rare detail for both genus types and preservation combined. Discovered in Haqel, Lebanon, a site renowned for its rich geological and palaeontological history, where such specimens are embedded in the region's distinctive sub-lithographic limestone, offering a rare glimpse into the marine life of the Eastern Mediterranean over 93 million years ago.
What makes this discovery particularly fascinating is the size and preservation of the specimens. While many fossils of this type are often fragmented or only partially preserved, these two creatures, both measuring around 39 cm in length, are complete and intact. This is a highly unusual discovery of scientific importance. Specimens of this size, preservation and condition are exceedingly rare, with most fossil plates of this type typically featuring specimens up to 12 inches long that display significant signs of damage with severely fractured plates, disarticulated specimen anatomies and plate discolouration.
The preserved anatomical detail visible on the fossils offers an extraordinary opportunity to study the stunning ancient aquatic species in detail, providing insight into the prehistoric ecosystems of the Cretaceous period. The pristine state of these specimens highlight the geological significance of Haqel and the region's importance in understanding the ancient marine life that once thrived in our ancient waters.
