About the Item

Wooden sculpture depicting the Madonna and Child, hand-carved and later gilded with gold leaf and lacquered. The work, probably made of basswood, measures 38 cm high, 16.5 cm wide and 11 cm deep. The Madonna is shown standing, wrapped in a golden mantle with broad, flowing folds, which contrasts with the polychrome parts of her face and hands. The Child, naked, is supported in an affectionate gesture and looks toward the Mother. The style, restrained and lacking markedly innovative elements, makes precise attribution difficult, but places the work with good probability between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, in the Italian, Alpine area. The sculpture is preserved in good condition, with normal signs of wear and minor cracks consistent with age. The gilding and polychromy show traces of later interventions or reshoots. Overall, the work maintains a strong decorative and devotional impact, with the patina of time enhancing its charm.
