Sky-blue Aragonite Mineral Specimen – Wenshan Mine, China

About the Item

Aragonite is a polymorph of calcium carbonate (CaCO3). It is elementally identical to calcite but is considerably rarer due to the very specific geological conditions required for its formation. It can exhibit a variety of forms and colors color, although most examples are colorless or red. This is a stunning example that is easily among the very best of its species. It is immediately impactful for its large size and dimensionality, both of which give the piece a sculpturesque presence, and then there’s the matter of its color. Most pale in color to this example with its intense and arresting sky-blue hue. The piece also has shimmering luster and a very unusual form that comprises a network of thick columns, rounded globes, and small prisms. Its shape has a star-like quality that many liken to Sputnik-inspired sculptures of the 50s and 60s. Others have said the piece reminds them of a crashing wave frozen in time. Dimensional, colorful, and dynamic, it is a breathtaking example of natural art. The piece comes with a bespoke stand. Reference: #16866.

The Yaogangxian mine (whose name translates to, “Jade-Mountain god”) is located within a 4 x 2.5 km expanse of a tungsten-tin (W-Sn) deposit in the Hunan Province of China. Although the deposit has been mined since 1914 for ore, it has only recently been a source of collectible mineral specimens. Despite being among the newer finds in the mineral collecting world, YGX fluorites have distinguished themselves with their enchanting water-color blues, lilacs, and purples and propensity for good form. This is a sculptural example made up of several cubic fluorite crystals...
