About the Item

Madagascar Jurassic - Cretaceous Period, 200 - 145 million years old Dimensions: 8.75 × 7.5 × 1.875 in. / 22 × 19 × 4.75 cm Weight: 4.125 lbs / 2.169 kg Height on custom display stand: 11.5 in. / 29 cm In this example, the complex pattern of white sutures that separated the air chambers appear are separated by rich brown fossil material. Traces of the creamy original shell are visible around the center. On one side the air chamber pattern is unusually disordered. We can only guess at the cause. Ammonites were cephalopods that resembled a squid with a shell. The predatory mollusks had eyes, tentacles, and spiral shells resembling a nautilus shell. Ammonites are closely related to octopus, squid, cuttlefish, and modern nautilus. The nautiloid both preceded and survived after ammonoids became extinct. Ammonites appeared in the fossil record about 240 million years ago, with the last descendants disappearing from the record 65 million years ago, at the end of the Cretaceous period. The last photo shows three whole ammonites for comparison. They range in size from 7.5 - 10 inches high (19 - 25 cm). The example in this listing is the middle specimen.
