About the Item

Madagascar Jurassic - Cretaceous Period, 200 - 145 million years old Dimensions: 9.25 × 8 × 2 in. / 23.5 × 20.5 × 5 cm Weight: 5.55 lbs / 2.424 kg In this example, the complex pattern of sutures that separated the air chambers, appear white, with rich brown fossil material between. The creamy original shell is present in a few small areas, and there is one very small section where the fossilization process created a red iridescence. Ammonites were cephalopods that resembled a squid with a shell. The predatory mollusks had eyes, tentacles, and spiral shells resembling a nautilus shell. Ammonites are closely related to octopus, squid, cuttlefish, and modern nautilus. The nautiloid both preceded and survived after the ammonoid went extinct. Ammonites appeared in the fossil record about 240 million years ago, with the last descendants disappearing from the record 65 million years ago, at the end of the Cretaceous period. The last photo shows four whole ammonites for comparison. They range in size from 5.5 - 9.25 inches tall (14 - 23.5 cm). The example in this listing is the largest, on the left.
