This is a pair of Sevres hand painted porcelain turquoise lidded urns. Both of them are depicting in the front a sea shore fishermen scenes. In one, a group of fishermen are preparing a sailboat and in the other one, they are pulling the net. The back are adorned with some gilt fishing tools and baskets with foliages. Both scenes are golden framed with scrolls of acanthus and flowers beside them. Gilt white concave long oval shaped rings alternated with gilt foliages and shamrocks decorate the necks of the urns. The same pattern are repeated in the lids, but no white color in the center. The bell shaped lids ended with pinecones finials. A mix of scrolls and Greek keys serve as handles. WHY WE LOVE IT: One of our absolute favorites!
A pair of 18th-century creamware flower holders complete with stands and covers made in England by Neale & Co. was one of the finest 18th century English potteries. The entire composition is classically elegant. The flower holders are decorated with turquoise swags and delicately painted flowers. The tops are pierced for flower stems. The handles are made in a pair of entwined snakes painted in turquoise with bright red mouths. This flower holder could be used with the tops for individual stems or without the tops for a bouquet. All parts of the set have survived and remained together for the past 200 years.
History of Creamware:
Creamware is the name given to a type of earthenware pottery made from cream-colored clays from Dorset and Devonshire combined with calcined flint.
Creamware was first produced in England sometime before 1740. Foremost of the pioneers of creamware in the Staffordshire Potteries was Thomas Whieldon. He produced a wide variety of creamware. The young Josiah Wedgwood was in partnership with Thomas Whieldon from 1754-1759. When Wedgwood left to set up his own business, he immediately directed his efforts to develop creamware. Many of the Staffordshire Potteries, especially Neale & Co., learned from Whieldon and Wedgwood and developed their own excellent creamware products.

Before describing the object under consideration, we must make an important clarification; the artifact, one of many that we will publish over time, is part of the museum collection of a historic Florentine crystal grinder that unfortunately closed recently. It is the Marcello Galgani & Son company, whose completely manual and artisanal work has not withstood the disproportionate advance of mass-produced mechanical processes! Marcello Galgani began his craft as a grinder and restorer in 1960; as the years went by, Marcello mastered and became familiar with particular techniques and shapes, resulting in the production of objects that manage to retain the freshness of grinding and engraving, the warmth and softness of light, and the inimitable flavor of unique artifacts. After several years, his son Lorenzo, who grew up among crystals, also entered the business and immediately became passionate about this ancient craft with skill and ability. Stimulated by the aesthetic sense of the past, father and son, set up a workshop in which the shapes they researched and created themselves are mouth-blown by traditional Tuscan glassmakers in Empoli, then ground and engraved using ancient sixteenth-century techniques, with motifs born from the Galgani's inexhaustible imagination or culturally inspired by designs of objects seen and studied in Florentine museums (Uffizi, Galleria Palatina, Museo degli Argenti, etc.). Marcello and Lorenzo Galgani were also Masters in the difficult art of restoration, bringing rare and precious objects back to life. As mentioned the company recently closed and disposed of all its last production, and only Marcello's old private museum collection remained, which includes unique and special objects created over time, a collection that the craftsman made available to us for a planned sale. All of the objects were made entirely by hand with old grinding wheels, but there were mainly two tools that allowed the creation of masterpieces: the right hand and the left hand of the master craftsman. Ancient glassmaking techniques were used for all the ground and engraved products: first, the object was ground with an emery wheel fed continuously by a jet of abrasive sand and water, then re-polished with a very fine-grained sandstone wheel also fed with water; the engravings were done freehand using as many as 10-15 small stone wheels for each design (flowers, branches, animals, etc. ); then the object was polished and shined; we must make, at this point, an important clarification on these last two operations: towards the end of the 1960s acid crystal polishing was devised, the object was immersed and rotated in a solution of sulfuric acid, fluoridic acid and water and in a short time all the defects left by the previous processes were eliminated, it was a fast, industrial operation that allowed to lower costs considerably, with discrete but not excellent results. But for Galgani's products polishing is done with a cork bark wheel wet with water and pumice, to make the surfaces more transparent, and finally polishing was achieved with a felt wheel wet with a paste of water, iron oxide, and cerium oxide. This series of processes takes an average of two days of work( sometimes much longer) for each object, each engraving or grinding is the result of the creative inventiveness of the two artisans, inventiveness that transforms crystal into reality material of the highest aesthetic value and inestimable value. All the items in the entire collection have never been used; they were part of the exhibition. Large crystal vase with base; the decorations, graceful and delicate, are in Neoclassical style. Crafted by the prestigious Royal Vienna Porcelain Manufactory, this exquisite pair of vases embodies the centuries-old tradition of European porcelain artistry.
Designed in an elegant baluster form, each vase features a deep navy ground, providing a striking backdrop for the finely hand-painted historical tableaux. The slender necks are adorned with delicate gilded patterns, further enhanced by ribbon-tied accents and raised gilded jewels, a particularly coveted element in high-quality porcelain. Matching porcelain lids, crowned with a pinecone finial, complete the sophisticated design, while the spreading socle bases mirror the decorative motifs of the necks.
The vases depict four significant historical events, masterfully reinterpreted from renowned artworks. One scene illustrates King Charles V liberating Christian slaves in Tunis, inspired by a 19th-century engraving by Nicaise de Keyser (Belgian, 1813-1887). Another portrays the Battle of Bouvines (1214), based on an 1827 painting by Horace Vernet (French, 1789-1863). A third panel brings to life Oliver Cromwell dissolving the Long Parliament, adapted from a 1782 print by Benjamin West (American, 1738-1820). The final scene, inspired by Jan Matejko’s (Polish, 1838-1893) 1866 painting ‘Rejtan’ (also known as ‘The Fall of Poland’), represents the first partition of Poland in 1773. The Austrian porcelain artists have reimagined these compositions with richer, more luminous colours, infusing the scenes with energy while softening their dramatic intensity.
Supporting these vases are ornate porcelain plinths, decorated with oval cartouches featuring additional painted vignettes. The undersides of the lids are inscribed with the corresponding scene titles. These include: Der letzte Reichstag zu Warschau (The last parliament in Warsaw), Karl V als Befreier der christlichen Sklaven in Tunis (Charles V as liberator of the Christian slaves in Tunis), Cromwell verhindert die Verfolgung des Waldenser (Cromwell prevents the persecution of the Waldensians), Bataille de Bouvines (Battle of Bouvines).
Each piece bears the blue ‘FD/ VIENNA / AUSTRIA’ mark for Franz Dörfl.
